What you'll hear

My cousin Elton was sweating a bit during his EDPM practical last week. His teacher, Mr. Adams, had just given them a task: identify and label the key hardware components of a standard office computer workstation as either input, output, or processing equipment.

Elton knew what a keyboard was, sure, but classifying it correctly felt like a trick question. He was looking at the monitor, then the mouse, then the big box under the desk, wondering, 'How am I supposed to know which is which?' That moment of confusion is exactly what we're going to clear up today as we examine the computer's crew: input, output, and processing.

It's all about understanding what each part *does* for the system. To really get to grips with this, let's think of a computer system like a busy kitchen. In any kitchen, you have things coming in, things happening in the middle, and then finished products going out, right?

First, we have our 'input' devices. These are like all the ingredients you bring into the kitchen: the flour, the sugar, the fresh fish from the market. They're raw data, waiting to be used.

In a computer, input devices are hardware that send data *into* the system.
