What you'll hear

Imagine you're Arjun, a farmer in Berbice, and you've just harvested the most incredible crop of mangoes and papayas. Your fields are overflowing, the fruit is perfect, but... the local market is already flooded with the same delicious produce.

You're watching the evening news, and there's a report about Guyanese farmers exporting produce all the way to Barbados, thanks to a regional trade agreement. And you think, 'How in the world do I get my beautiful, fresh fruit across the sea, without it spoiling, and without it costing so much that no one can afford it?' This is exactly where something called CARICOM — the Caribbean Community — steps in.

Think of it like a really big, well-organised neighbourhood, where all the houses are different countries in the Caribbean, and they've all agreed to help each other out. One of the biggest ways CARICOM helps Guyana, and farmers like Arjun, is through what we call 'economic integration'. This means countries agree to trade with each other more easily, almost like you're trading with a neighbour instead of someone halfway across the world.
