What you'll hear

The aroma of sweet potato pudding and pineapple tarts filled the school hall — it was bake sale day, and Rohan, Latoya, and Teresa were already deep into a lively debate. They’d all contributed something, but now that the profits were rolling in, the question was: who gets what slice, and who even gets a say in the first place? Rohan, who baked almost everything and spent hours setting up, felt he should have the biggest say in how the profits were split.

Latoya, who put up cash for the fancy packaging, insisted she should get a fixed amount back first, provided there were enough profits. And Teresa, who loaned money for the extra tables, just wanted her loan repaid, with a bit extra, before anyone even touched the profits. Sound familiar?

It’s a classic showdown, and it’s actually a perfect way to understand the heart of company finance: ordinary shares, preference shares, and debentures. This is The Share Showdown: Who Owns What?
