What you'll hear

So, you know how sometimes you get a WhatsApp message, and it has a number that feels… important, but you’re not quite sure what it means? My friend Shanice sent me one the other day. It said, “Guess what?

Twenty-five percent of the students got full marks on the Math quiz!” Twenty-five percent. That’s a good result, right?

But my immediate thought was, how many students is that, exactly? What does twenty-five percent actually *look* like when you’re counting heads? This is why we need to understand 'Percentage Power-Ups: From Percent to Parts' – to decode these numbers and see what they really mean.

The word 'percent' itself gives us a huge clue. 'Per' means 'for every,' and 'cent' means 'one hundred.' Think of it like a century, which is one hundred years, or even a centipede, which is supposed to have one hundred legs. So, twenty-five percent literally means 'twenty-five for every one hundred.'

And when we talk about 'parts of a whole,' what’s our favourite way to show 'parts out of a total'? Fractions, of course! So, twenty-five percent can be written as the fraction twenty-five over one hundred.
