What you'll hear

My cousin Nadia lives out near Linden, and she's always exploring the rainforest behind her family farm. She'll come running up to me with a strange leaf, maybe a bright red flower I've never seen before, and ask, 'Michael, what *is* this one? How do people even know all these names for everything in nature?'

It's a great question, and it makes you think about how we understand the world around us. The sheer amount of knowledge about plants, animals, rivers, mountains, and even the air we breathe is incredible. It feels like there's an answer for everything, but where did that information come from?

It didn't just appear out of nowhere; people had to figure it out, piece by piece. And that's where science comes in. At its heart, science is a systematic way of acquiring knowledge about the natural world.

The key word there is 'systematic,' meaning it's an organised, step-by-step process, not just guessing or making things up. It's about careful observation, asking clear questions, and testing those questions to find reliable answers.
