What you'll hear

Is this moss alive? Sasha leaned in close, poking the fuzzy green patch clinging to the rusty frame of her old bicycle in the shed. Devon, always a bit too quick with an answer, shrugged.

Nah, it's just green, Sasha. It's not moving, is it? Now, that's a brilliant question Sasha asked, and Devon's answer, while common, highlights a real puzzle.

How do we actually tell if something is truly alive? What's the difference between a green stain and a living organism? This isn't just about moss on a bike; it's the fundamental question at the heart of biology.

We're going to work through the mystery of what makes something alive, using a really useful tool called M-R-S G-R-E-N. That's M-R-S G-R-E-N – a mnemonic that helps us remember the seven characteristics of life. Let's start with the 'M' in M-R-S G-R-E-N: Movement.

Devon said the moss wasn't moving. But movement doesn't always mean running or walking like an animal, does it? Think about a plant: it grows towards the sunlight, its roots push down into the soil.

That's movement, just a very slow kind.
