What you'll hear

Picture this: you're completely absorbed in a new online game, fingers flying across your tablet screen, trying to clear that impossible level. Meanwhile, your mom is nearby, deep in concentration on her laptop for work. Then, you suddenly remember that school trip to the data center last year, seeing those massive racks of blinking lights, humming away in a cold room.

And you might have thought, 'Wait a minute... my tablet, Mom's laptop, and those giant server racks—they’re all called 'computers,' but they look, feel, and even sound completely different.' It’s like calling a bicycle, a car, and a jumbo jet all 'vehicles.'

They are, but they're built for very different things, aren't they? That’s exactly the question we’re going to explore in 'The Computer Kingdom: Big, Small, and Super Strong.' Why are there so many different kinds of computers, and what makes each one unique?

It's all about matching the tool to the job. The truth is, 'computer' is a really broad term, like saying 'building.' You've got a small shed and a skyscraper, both technically buildings.

We classify computers mainly by their size, processing power—that's how fast and much they can think—and what they’re used for.
