What you'll hear

So, picture this: your Grade Six class is buzzing because Ms. Hussain just announced a trip to Splashmins! Everyone's excited, but then she says, 'Okay, I need a quick estimate for the trip cost.

It's twelve thousand, three hundred and forty-five dollars per student, and there are twenty-eight of us. What's the total, roughly, to the nearest thousand?' And you know what happens next, right?

Someone probably shouts out something like, 'Twelve thousand three hundred and forty-five multiplied by twenty-eight is…' and then they trail off, because that's a lot of calculating to do in your head just for a quick estimate. Let’s start with something simpler, like the number of students: twenty-eight. We want to round twenty-eight to the nearest ten. Think of a number line.

Twenty-eight sits between twenty and thirty, right?
