What you'll hear

How do you help your friend with their math homework when they’re totally stuck on twenty-seven raised to the power of two-thirds? It’s a tricky one, isn’t it? You're sitting there together, and your friend's looking at it like it’s written in another language.

You can almost see the confusion swirling around them. They’re thinking about fractional indices like they’re some kind of ancient code. But it's not as complicated as it sounds.

Let’s break it down together, step by step, so you can be the math hero your friend needs! First, let’s look closer at twenty-seven raised to the power of two-thirds. The fraction two-thirds is what we call a fractional index, and it tells us two things: it involves taking a root, and then raising to a power.

Now, let’s tackle that fraction two-thirds. The bottom number, three, means we’re taking the cube root — that means we’re looking for a number that, when multiplied by itself three times, gives us twenty-seven. Can you guess what that is? That’s right!

It’s three, because three times three times three is twenty-seven. So now, let’s take that cube root of twenty-seven, which gives us three. Next, we have to raise it to the power of two.

That’s just three squared.
