What you'll hear

Picture this: my friend Jaden was chatting with his best friend Jamal on WhatsApp, telling him about his day. He typed, "I saw a dog at the park today, it was so funny!" Jamal quickly messaged back, "Oh, which dog?

The one from the corner shop?" Jaden was a bit confused, because he just meant *any* dog, not a specific one Jamal knew. This little mix-up, where Jaden meant a general animal and Jamal thought of a specific one, helps us understand something really important in English.

We're going to explore what we call a common noun today on Noun Navigator. Think of it like finding the everyday stars in the vast sky of words – they help us name everything around us, especially the general things. So, what exactly is a common noun?

Well, it's simply a word that names a general person, place, or thing. It's not specific at all; it could be *any* one of those things, like Jaden's "dog" or "park" from his message. These words are the workhorses of our language, helping us talk about the world without always needing exact names.
