What you'll hear

My cousin Mark is out on his small farm, frowning at his field. He loves growing ochroes, but this season, he’s trying to figure out if he should just plant more of them, or try something new with his callaloo. He’s facing one of the classic "Field Puzzles": should he be mixing it up, or sticking to one type of crop?

This is all about how we arrange our crops in the field, and it’s essential for smart land use and sustainable farming. Now, Mark’s first idea — just planting ochroes, like he usually does — that’s what we call `monoculture`. Mono, like one, and culture, meaning growing.

It’s simple, right? All your effort goes into one crop, you know exactly what it needs. But imagine eating only ochroes for every single meal, every day.

Your body wouldn’t get all the nutrients it needs, and you’d probably get tired of it pretty fast. Well, it’s a bit like that for the soil. Monoculture can drain specific nutrients and attract pests that love that one crop, because they know exactly where to find their next meal.

So, what if Mark decided to plant callaloo *amongst* his ochroes in the very same field, at the very same time? This is our first "mixing it up" strategy: `intercropping`.
