What you'll hear

Imagine this: your friend Kevin is out on the community field, recording his friends playing football for his new YouTube channel. He’s got his phone pointed at the action, and he wants to add some exciting commentary, you know, to really capture the moment. But there’s a small problem.

When he plays back his first attempt, it just sounds a little… flat. He says things like, 'Jamal kicks the ball,' or 'Shanice runs down the wing.' It's not quite giving that 'live action' feel he’s going for, is it?

That’s because Kevin is using what we call the Simple Present Tense. Now, the Simple Present is great for talking about things that happen regularly, like 'I eat breakfast every morning' or 'The sun rises in the east.' It describes habits or general truths.

But Kevin isn't describing a habit, is he? He wants to tell his viewers exactly what’s happening *at that very second* on the field. He needs a way to show that the action is ongoing, right now, as he speaks.
