What you'll hear

Have you ever tried to boil water for a cup of tea, watching the thermometer climb steadily… and then, it just stops? You keep the stove on high, the water is bubbling furiously, but the temperature reading seems stuck, often right at one hundred degrees Celsius. It’s a curious thing, isn't it?

Shanice was making Milo tea the other day, and she swore her thermometer was broken. She said, 'Mr. Leonard, the heat is still on, so why isn't the temperature going up?

What is this constant temperature mystery?' It feels backwards, doesn't it? You're adding more and more heat energy, but the temperature, which usually tells us how hot something is, just refuses to budge.

Well, this is a classic example of what we examine with heating and cooling curves in Chemistry. Here's the challenge: what do you think that extra heat energy is doing, if it’s not making the water hotter? Is it disappearing, or is it being used for something else entirely?
