What you'll hear
The canteen line crawls forward, and Asha squints at the menu board. Today, it’s fried rice and chicken again, but she can’t help but wonder — why is there always so much fried rice, yet no fresh salad or fruits available? It’s a typical lunch rush at school, and everyone seems to have the same thought — where are all the other options?
Asha grabs her tray and picks up a piece of fried chicken, her mind still racing through the possibilities, thinking about food in a broader sense. This connects directly to food availability — one of the key components of food security. Food availability is the physical supply of food in a place — what’s on hand from domestic production, stocks and imports — in sufficient quantities and appropriate quality.
In a school canteen, that means which foods are actually delivered and prepared for sale today. So, let’s break this down. If the only item on offer is fried rice, that shows limited availability of other foods (like fruits and vegetables).
The nutrition problem that results — a diet low in vitamins and fibre — is a utilisation issue (diet quality), even though the canteen might have enough calories.
